How to manage your Miscellania Kingdom effectively
Look at the following two questions:

This article is about managing your Miscellania Kingdom effectively. That’s it – effectively. Many people know the rules of this minigame, many people are high level enough to play it, but only a few knows how to really get profit out of it. Let’s take a look.

Miscellania Kingdom is located on the Miscellania Island (north-west corner of the map) and you can get there by ship from Rellekka or via a fairy ring. There are a few quests you can do there and as a result of the quests completion you can get access to the minigame called “Miscellania Kingdom Management”. There are guides about the quests and there are guides about the minigame on many fan sites. And yes I would recommend following them in order to get the quests done. But the guides about actually managing the Kingdom are way to complex. Don’t ask me why!

It is not that complex in reality and here are just a few simple rules and steps I follow to (Remember the two questions?):

Make money
Get free tree seeds

How do you make money in Runescape?
How in the world did you get to 80th in Farming?
What could be common about these questions?

Well… Funny thing is that they have the same answer for me: Miscellania Kingdom. Yes, managing Miscellania Kingdom is one of my main sources of money and it is also a daily source of FREE tree seeds for my Farming skill.

Quests To Do:

Throne of Miscellania (to get access to the Kingdom management)
Royal Trouble (to make the Kingdom management really profitable)
Fairy Tale Part I and start the Part II, so you could use fairy rings to access the island.
Note that the requirements for these quests are quite demanding:

Hero’s, Fremennik Trials, Lost City and Nature Spirit Quests (what a list!)
In addition to the quests requirements: 40 agility, 40 slayer, 35 herblore and 45 woodcutting.
Assuming that you have done the quests, here are simple steps to manage your Kingdom:
Once a day visit the Kingdom. Use fairy ring (CIP) to get there (That’s why Fairy Tale quests are important. Fairy ring is the only decent way to get there). Before you go there make sure you have 6-7 open slots in your bank.
On the way to the castle stop and chop some maples to restore your popularity. Just a few chops really (10-20 seconds).
Go to consular Ghrim and ask him how your Kingdom is doing. He will tell you that your popularity is 100% and ask if you want to collect resources. Say ‘yes’, and he will show you what your workers collected. After that he will show you the ‘management’ screen. If you have less than 750K in the coffins, add some money. I do it by 300K chunks, so I don’t need to bring money there every day.
That’s it. Teleport to your bank and see what you’ve got. You should have 803 maple logs, 328 coal (or 600+ flax, if you do flax instead of coal), 8 bird nests as a bonus from maples (that’s where free tree seeds come from!), 2-3 gems (or herb seeds if you do flax).
Some math to make you feel good:
Once a day your workers will take 75K from the kingdom coffins.
In return you get:

800 maples – 80K
330 coal – 60-66K
2-3 gems – 1-5K
8 bird nests (with rings, tree seeds and eggs) – hmm, hard to say, maybe 80-100K on average
So your daily profit is: 146-176K. Not bad, huh?
And, of course, this is the perfect way to raise farming, by getting daily supply of free tree seeds. Assuming you plant all tree seeds, you still get daily profit of 66-76K.

Initial setup:

Go to the Kingdom and raise your popularity to 100%. It may take 10-15 min. I personally cut maples there, but if you are better at mining or fishing – you can do it too.
Go visit consular Ghrim in the castle (you’ll know how to find him after the quests). Ask him about managing your Kingdom. He will tell you that your popularity is good and present you with a screen where you can make management actions (such as, like put/withdraw money, reallocate worker assignments between resources).
Put at least 750K in the coffins. No less, otherwise you won’t get full rewards. I usually have 1200K in there and add 300K every 4 days, as money gets spent.
Select assignments. You will have 15 workers to allocate to resources (jobs). Put 9 of them to maples and remaining 6 to flax or coal. (I get maples and coal, but maples and flax works just as well)
Leave the Kingdom and go do whatever you wish to do in RS or real life
Daily routine:

So back to the questions:

How do you make money in Runescape?
How in the world did you get to 80th in Farming?
Well, you know, I just do this ‘Kingdom Management thingy’.

I think way back to 2001 when I first stated playing Runescape, back when being able to smith rune was a dream yet to be accomplished by any player, back in a time where tutorial island didn’t exist…

Runescape was in its infancy and the resources available for struggling players were few and of relatively poor quality. There were so many services players were screaming out for yet Jagex was simply unable to provide – Runescape skill guides, quest guides, forums, calculators, tips, general help etc. This inability to provide the most basic help was the catalyst for the formation of many Runescape help sites many of which are still in existence today.

Now I know Runescape is a popular game in its own right, but I can’t help but feel that with the aid of Runescape fan sites, players became more entrenched in the game as they progressed and I have no doubt as a result were more loyal to the game. There are people at fan sites that haven’t played Runescape actively in years but still talk about the game and occasionally jump on as well as try to provide a service for those looking for Runescape help. So it always annoys me when Jagex feel the need to badmouth the very sites that served their game for so long, and still continue to do so only by the tireless dedication by some of Runescape’s most long serving and loyal players. I wonder if there will ever be a day where Jagex publicly recognize Runescape fan sites or the service they have provided the game?

What do you think of Jagex’s stance on non association with Runescape fan sites? Do you think Runescape would be the game it is today without the support of such Runescape fan sites?

OK I just wanted to clarify a quick point before I get into the crust of this article. This site is in no way illegal or against Jagex rules, they just don’t like some of the advertising on it. Also, the sites you visit don’t in anyway endanger your Runescape account, only what you do in the game of Runescape can endanger your account.

OK a little over a month ago Jagex made a very controversial news announcement in there Runescape Bots and Real World Trading news item in which they said this:

Finally, we have noticed some 3rd party sites, which call themselves ‘fansites’, but then advertise black market trading sites. This will no longer be tolerated. By running such advertising these sites are directly supporting these gangs, and are thus causing the botting problems they then complain about! We don’t consider sites that encourage our players to break the rules and endanger their own users to be ‘fansites’. (i.e. They’re advertising things to their users, which, if the advertising works, will serve to get their users banned!) We consider them cheat sites, and they will be treated accordingly. True fans of the game don’t encourage cheating!

This brings us to the last point. HOW YOU CAN HELP! You can help us by:

1. Boycott any corrupt ‘fansites’ which advertise RuneScape gold for sale. There are plenty of genuine fansites out there who don’t support cheating in this way, and we fully support those sites. Use those ones instead. Also, don’t advertise, link to, or talk about any of these corrupt fansites. Obviously, if they stop supporting cheating, you can start using them again.

So when this was first announced there was a big commotion on a number of Runescape sites, there was even an article posted over at RuneHead, here and here, both of which I found reasonably interesting and with the first probably arguing the opposite of how I feel about the issue, on the side of - that sites should be doing everything they can to comply with Jagex’s wishes. Though the second article’s argument is a lot more congruent to my own.

Anyway, soon after the announcement of boycotting sites with Runescape gold selling I made a response to one of my staff member’s questions of what I was planning to do. The general premise of my statements revolved around the notion that this Runescape gold selling and real world trading coupled with the Runescape cheat ads is Jagex’s problem not the owner’s of Runescape related site’s problem and it’s a real low blow to push the blame onto Runescape fan site owners and not actively seek constructive resolutions to the core problem.

Whilst my sites were never made with the intention of making money, I’m definitely not adverse to selling moral advertising to the highest bidder, and unfortunately Jagex aren’t Offering Runescape Sites an Alternative Source of Income nor are they operating a Good Business Model for Runescape in my honest opinion, nor are they acknowledging that it was their own short coming which Created Runescape Fan Sites. Here is my comments to the staff members of the sites we run:

At this stage I’m just going to wait and let the dust settle - thus far I haven’t seen any change in the advertising that is on any of the major Runescape fansites, not to mention there are a significant percentage of free hosted Runescape sites, like InvisionFree forums, that don’t actually get a say in what sort of advertising is placed on their sites and I’m quietly confident the guys over at InvisionFree, and services life them, supplying the forums don’t give a rats about what Jagex thinks about Runescape gold ads or Runescape cheats.

So with that in mind I, at least for the time being, am willing to wait and see what happens in the greater Runescape community. Personally I don’t think anything is going to change.

I mean if you look at the other major Runescape fan sites like Tip it, Sals, Runescape Realm & Zybez etc, none of them have taken the bait, plus Jagex makes out like it is something we can just switch on and off - it isn’t, there are limits to what we are able to do in regards to Google Ads, and the people run these gold selling companies aren’t idiots, I mean how hard is it for them to make new ads to replace the old ones that we have blacklisted, or setup more FREE Google AdWords accounts.

Long story short, us fan site owners can’t stop this problem, but Jagex is asking us to “try” even though it will ultimately be a futile attempt costing fan site owners thousands without offering them Alternative Sources of Income. Now I personally think there are a number of avenues Jagex has either not considered or have chosen to not opt for that would result in a much more positive resolution to the situation - Solving the Runescape Gold Selling Problem.

So what have Jagex achieved out of all this commotion? I’d imagine not a lot other than further alienate Runescape fan site owners, but at least they are consistent - Jagex has always badmouthed fan sites! Jagex have never linked to a fan site, they have ALWAYS told people to avoid fan sites, and they have done everything possible to draw as many people away from fan sites, including making rules against people even talking about them in Runescape.

So forgive me if I don’t care much for Jagex’s approval, I mean it’s not like us fan site owners/users have ever got it.

Those were my thoughts a couple of weeks ago and for the most part they remain pretty much the same today. I think Jagex really needs to sit back and reassess the issue rather than trying the same old tactics that seems to have not only been ineffective, but has also resulted in Upward Trend of Buying Runescape Gold. Maybe it is time they looked at other alternatives to Solving the Runescape Gold Selling Problem.

Gifts in Runescape
Do you like to receive gifts? What kind of question is that?! Of course, everybody likes gifts!
OK. How about this one: do you like to give gifts? Surprisingly, most people do - even more than receive gifts! I am one of them.
I like to see happy smiling faces of my friends when they unwrap that box and peer inside. I feel like sharing part of my life with them at that moment.

Now, how about Runescape? What would you give to your Runescape friend at his or her birthday? What would you give to your Runescape girlfriend to cheer her up? What if you made a contest and want to reward the winner?

Money? - dull, it looks more like a charity not a gift…
Logs, Bars, Runes? - what kind of gift is that? “Happy Birthday, my dear friend! Here are your willow logs! I just chopped them.” Nice…
Armor and weapons? - nah, everybody should take care of his own battle stuff.

Then what? Let me share with you some of my thoughts.

1. Flowers
Of course, flowers are good gifts! Add a chocolate bar to it and it’ll be perfect!
Flower seeds (mithril seeds) can be bought in the Legends Guild, you also get some seeds after the Waterfall quest.

2. Cooked Sea Turtles or Manta Rays
Those are ROYAL gifts. Not many people in Runescape can give one like that!

3. Casket
I think, it is the best gift! You never know what’s inside and it could be as valuable as a half key. Plus, you have to work to get caskets and your friends would appreciate that. Therefore, it’s number one on my list!
4. Keg with useful beer (Greenman’s Ale, Dragon Bitter, Axeman’s Folly, Chef’s Delight, Slayer’s Respite) or cider.
A keg is hard to get (you have to grow Calquat tree or buy it from other players) and you need to put effort and time in brewing. But the result is indeed a very nice gift!

5. Cloth, gloves and capes
Always a good gift. Let your friend to choose a color!

Jagex have made it very clear on a number of occasions that they want to prevent Runescape items, primarily referring to Runescape gold, being traded for real world money. Though despite their best efforts real world trading for Runescape items continues, and if anything, grows every month with more Runescape gold selling merchants opening their online shops every month.

Jagex have attempted to warn and ban both buyers and sellers of gold. They have attempted to take legal action against a number of these Runescape gold selling merchants. They have now even tried to rope Runescape fan sites into the cause by asking Runescape players to boycott Runescape fan sites that run Runescape ads that link to Runescape gold merchant sites. So my question is, why when none of these methods have worked do they persist? I believe there are alternatives available that are worthy of consideration.

Now the solution I’m going to propose is not new, it has been suggested that many times before, but from my perspective really does seem like the best solution to the issue, and that is for Jagex to sell the Runescape gold themselves.

OK, so a lot of you are now arguing that doing so would destroy the integrity of the game, but I’d like to suggest that whilst Jagex should consider selling gold, that their should definitely be certain restrictions and regulations placed on this process. I’ll get to them soon.

Firstly I want to talk about some basic economics, you know, the crappy subject that many hate but in my honest opinion is what drives everything in this world (though I have studied economics for nearing six years and am about to graduate with my economics degree, so my opinion might be a little biased).

Anyway, Runescape gold is obviously a precious commodity, and rightly so, it takes many hours to earn yourself a meager million pieces of the stuff. Now there are lots of people out there that would love to have more of the stuff, for whatever reason, and are willing to part with a few bucks to get their hands on it but unfortunately Jagex is attempting to regulate the market, well actually they are trying to eliminate the market by making it a banable offense to trade for real world items/money. This very act of regulation is what leaves door open for a black market for Runescape gold with sellers looking to come in and supply the very product that Jagex themselves are unwilling to supply.

Basically what I’m saying is that this is a problem that Jagex has created because they believe that they are maintaining the integrity of the game by banning such trading.

So what would happen if Jagex themselves was to look to sell gold? Well firstly they’d destroy the black market gold sales! Why? Because unlike Jagex, gold merchants have to actually play the game to make the gold or purchase the gold off other players – these are all costs of production, but Jagex on the other hand have an unlimited supply all at no cost giving them lowest cost of production. In addition to this I’m quite sure those looking to buy Runescape gold would be much more willing to pay Jagex a small premium above the prices of that currently offered by black market gold sellers just to ensure that they don’t have the accounts they have spent countless hours developing banned.

Another argument posed is the notion that some people that play Runescape at times can be a bit obsessive and some players investing hundreds of dollars into buying Runescape gold isn’t an unlikely scenario. There have already been reports of WoW (another MMORPG) players spending upwards of $1000 on buying WoW gold. Now I personally think that this is much more of an issue because it is something that Jagex might be liable for. My solution to this problem would be fairly simple, Jagex should just cap the amount of gold they sell to any one individual in any given month, I’d probably argue the cap should be set somewhere between 2M – 5M.

From my business perspective I think this would be an absolute goldmine for Jagex, not to mention would help diversify their currently extremely narrow income sources; currently only consisting of subscription revenues and banner advertising. Now I mean if I were Jagex I’d probably use that extra income to reinvest into the game and its development to counteract any disgruntled uprising as a result of the policy change, not that there would be one if people understood that it was a move designed to destroy the black market gold sales. I mean it’s not like Runescape players don’t believe everything else that Jagex announce as gospel anyway. So I’m sure a nice bit of public relations spin would settle the masses.

So despite Jagex’s fears that it would be the end of the game I’m sure that for the most part the move would be received in a fairly neutral light with the added benefit of all parties being better off, with Jagex being financially better off, players having the ability to buy gold and not running the risk of being banned for buying gold and with Jagex hoping reinvesting funds into creating more features and upgrades players win again. The only losers would be those black market traders, but that would be the objective.

Now the arguments against such a move often center around the thought that allowing players to be able to buy gold would be unfair to those that can’t afford such luxuries. Well my argument to that is there are already players that are affording the luxury of members which is a distinct advantage over the free to play version of the game in regards to raising skills and earning Runescape money.

This brings me to my next point, Runescape isn’t all about money, actually I’d argue quite the opposite no one can see how much money you have in your bank, your are more often than not judged by your stats, and at the end of the day money doesn’t raise you stats for you, everyone has to slog out the man hours raising levels personally. Sure money might make it that bit easier in some skills but that doesn’t negate the fact that they still need to be leveled.
Now some might argue that the influx of gold would result in increased prices for raw products and material in Runescape, and I’d imagine that this influx may well force slight upward pressure on prices, but these upward pressures on prices would also result in the dispersion of gold throughout the Runescape economy, because if prices go up for raw materials then all players selling raw materials would find that they would be earning a better return for their hours spent developing skills like fishing, woodcutting, mining etc. Plus considering the black market for Runescape gold would have been destroyed there would be a large reduction in the use of Chinese gold farmers using autobots to farm gold, making it easier for real players to make a good Runescape living. So whilst introduction of more gold into the Runescape economy would result in slightly inflated prices players should also be earning more as a result.

Now I might be really going out on a limb here, and this suggestion I’m about to make might cause more problems than it solves, but if Jagex were looking to stop inflationary pressure they could potentially look at buying Runescape gold back of players, or potentially trading Runescape gold for membership. That may sound a little crazy but it would solve many of Runescape’s price inflationary pressures, though it might reintroduce the Chinese gold farmer issues, giving gold farmers incentive to exploit Runescape glitches and use Runescape autobots to farm gold.

Another alternative that might also be consider is one that Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has already implemented in their MMORPG, Everquest, which is a the creation of alternative private servers for gamers that want to be able to participate in real world trading. So players of EverQuest are able to buy and sell gold with each other in a SOE managed auction house whilst Sony take a small percentage of the trade value. So Sony is making some good money as well as keeping players happy by providing the service they asked for. According to the surveys and research done involving EverQuest players, for the most part, players are very happy with how the system works and Sony didn’t note any detrimental effects to the game with the introduction of the system.

Now I know that some of these choices may be tough at first but I honestly believe that attempting to fight these market forces (ie – people wanting to buy gold) is naive, people want what they want and attempting to manipulate the market almost always fails and it just makes so much more business sense to take advantage of the general market demand. So all in all, if people want to buy Runescape gold then bloody sell them gold - it costs nothing and they stand to make a fortune from it. Plus I’d like to think that players would generally be better off as well and the major drawbacks taking this option could be largely offset with some good regulation.

What is the best Runescape Fishing method?

   Posted by: admin    in Uncategorized

With introduction of the new “barbarian” ways to catch fish an old question “What is the best fishing method?” arisen again. I, being a long time advocate of Monkfish and Salmon/Trout fly-fishing, was quick to rule out these new “barbarian” methods. But then I thought: “Why? Am I really sure?”

So I ended up making a set of experiments on most common fishing methods to find the truce. What can I say? Results appeared to be quite shocking.

Here is what I did at fishing level of 79.
15 minutes fishing sessions in Shilo village, Catherby, Barbarian Outpost and Pistachios Colony. I tried:

Sharks in Catherby (banking them of course)
Lobsters in Catherby (banking them)
Swordfish/Tune using Harpoon in Catherby (banking them)
Swordfish/Tune with bare hands in Catherby (banking them)
New ‘barbarian’ fly-fishing at Barbarian Outpost (powerfishing using caviar and roe as bait)
Monkfish in Pistachios Colony (banking them)
Salmon/Trout fly-fishing in Shilo (selling to the store)
Rainbow fly-fishing in Shilo (banking them)
I calculated average experience and money I was getting from 15 min fishing sessions. Money were calculated with the following prices in mind:

Sharks – 1K ea
Monkfish – 400 ea
Lobsters – 250 ea
Swordfish – 300 ea
Tuna – 50 ea
Rainbow fish – 100 ea
Salmon/Trout – based on a price in the shop at the moment.
Here are the results.
As you can see the new ‘barbarian’ fly fishing appeared to be the fastest way to 99! Plus it gives generous Agility, Strength and Cooking bonuses. Salmon/Trout fly-fishing ought to go away (at least for members).
Though, Monkfish is also very good way up. Yes, it gives less experience, but it is compensated by a good monetary reward.
And what came as a shock to me is that Shark fishing apparently does not make any sense! Monkfish gives better experience and money! No more Shark fishing for me.
Finally, harpoons getting obsolete (unless you are a pure skiller). Bare hands fishing is exactly as fast as Harpooning, but gives an additional Strength bonus.

I hope you find this report useful. If you haven’t completed the Barbarian training, it is probably a time to do so . At least as fishing goes.

P.S. It would be interesting to find out if the same proportions remain on other fishing levels. Mine was 79 at the time. If you decide to try it out on another level I would appreciate if you could share the results with me. Thanks!

Some of the recent Runescape skills may seem quite complex to start. A lot of new items get involved as well as new shops, areas, monsters and techniques. People get one look at a multipage skill guide and go “Do I really need to read all this?!!”
Well, the answer is NO. At least not all at once. There are usually just a few things you really need to know in order to get into a new skill.

And this is exactly what this article about: 10 simple steps to start your Hunting carrier (*).

Step 1. Get into Yanille.

Step 2. Buy 2-3 bird snares and a noose wand in a hunter shop west of the Magic Guild. These items are not expensive at all (18gp for all). Take just a little bit of food with you. One or two lobsters will be sufficient. You only need food in case you get attacked while you walking to the hunting area - while you are hunting no one will attack you. It is a safe skill.

Step 3. Go south into the Feldip (Jungle) hunting area. You can walk there (see the map below), but better(and faster) ways are to teleport via a fairy ring (AKS) or fly into on a Gnome glider.

Step 4. Once you get into the hunting area go all the way east. On the shore there are Crimson Swifts (red birds) which you can catch with your bird snare (you will be able to use just one snare for a while). Catch birds (they give good exp - 34) till level 7. It should take 20 minutes or so.

Step 5. Then you can do some tracking. Just west of the Crimson Swifts there are holes with Kebbits. Investigate one, you’ll see tracks, follow the tracks and investigate near bushes and plants until you find the animal. Use noose wand to catch it.

Step 6. Get 2-4 levels on Kebbits. Then return to Crimson Swifts (red birds). You can switch between these two activities.

Step 7. When you reach level 19, go further west and start catching Tropical Wagtails (birds). These are awesome for leveling.

Step 8. Do that till level 43, when you switch to falconry.

Step 9. Somewhere in between you may take a break and get jungle camo outfit too.

Using these steps you should get to falconry in 5-6 hours.

Oh yeah, step 10: have fun in the process!

Why become a runescape Member

   Posted by: admin    in Runescape Help, Runescape News

When people become Runescape members one of the first things they say is something like: “Wow! This is so big! There are so many skills, areas and quests… What should I do next?” Yes, indeed, it may be a bit overwhelming. The world is suddenly several times bigger, eight more skills and over a hundred new quests! And that’s not counting mini games and such!

In this article I will give a few recommendations to make the transition from F2P to P2P smoother.

Quests
Within these 100+ new Runescape member quests there are a few which every player simply must do in order to play the game in full. These quests would unlock new skills, open new important areas, give the means of transportation and allow usage of dragon weapons. Here is the list:
Areas.
What areas to explore first? Definitely the Seers and Catherby villages and the lands around them.

Catherby is the fishing capital of Runescape and overall a very enjoyable place to abide. You can fish, cook, chop oaks, willows and yews, farm and trade there. And it is just a few steps away from Seers village which is probably the most important member village/town. Woodcutting thrives there: oaks, maples, yews and magic logs are being banked in Seers. Flax field and bow string industry. Coal trucks unloading station. Plus a constant marketplace inside the Seers bank walls. It is possible to find an empty bank in Varrock in member worlds, but the Seers bank is never ever empty.

Skills
Let’s start from the skills. Which one to tackle first? I suggest Agility! This skill while not producing any money would help you overall by allowing you to move faster and freely in the Runescape world. Your energy will restore quicker and many important shortcuts will become available. The only difficult part is to get to the Gnome Agility Arena which is located far to the west. Ask your friend to walk you there or take one of these three routes yourself:

(if your combat is 50+ you may risk to pass over the White Wolf mountain). Walk north west from Falador, pass through Taverly and over the White Wolf mountain (beware the wolves and take some food with you). Next walk directly to the west from Catherby, between Sorcerer’s Tower and Ranging Guild, south of the Fishing Guild, over the bridge and to the gates of the Gnome Stronghold. Enter through the gates and you’ll find the Gnome Agility Arena directly to the north from the gates.
If your combat is low you can take a ship from Port Sarim to Ardougne. Cross East Arougne, go over the bridge to West Ardougne and go north west from there to the Gnome Stronghold gates.
You can also buy or make a Game Necklace (Saphire necklace) and use it to teleport to Barbarian Outpost. From there go south by the east shore of the lake, pass the waterfalls, and keep going south until you see the bridge over the river. Cross it and go west to the Gnome Stronghold gates.
You can safely train at the Gnome Agility Arena until level 25-30. It may take a while though. I would recommend getting at least level 20, so you could cross a log between Seers village and coal trucks. At this level you will also be able to use other useful shortcuts including very important Crumbling Wall in west Falador.

Druidic Ritual.
Unlocks the Herblore skill. There are no requirements for this quest.
Fishing Contest.
Opens an underground pass under the White Wolf Mountain. If you can’t teleport to Catherby, this pass will be of utter importance to you. You need level 10 Fishing for this quest.
Lost City.
Gives access to the lost city of Zanaris with possibility to buy and wield dragon weapons (dragon long and dagger)! Very important quest. You need 31 Crafting, 36 Woodcutting and ability to kill a 101 level Spirit with your bare hands! Combat 50+ should be able to do this quest just fine.
Priest in Peril.
Opens the whole Morytania area! The members quest is very easy. Some basic combat skills will do.
The Grand Tree.
Gives you ability to use Gnome Gliders – the most convenient and reliable transportation system which compliments the teleports perfectly. The quest is not easy though. You need 25 Agility and about 50 Combat. At the end of the quest you will have to kill a level 172 Black Demon!
Finally, I just want to add that I personally envy new members. The first several months of membership are definitely the most enjoyable months of Runescape life. Exploration, adventures, new areas and friends! This is the essence of the game. Have fun and good luck in the big new Runescape member world!

In my previous post on Runescape Offering Fan Site Other Source of Income I mentioned the idea that Jagex could look to implement a referral program, which I thought would not only help Runescape fan sites but would also grow the game itself. This idea of a referral program is a new form of marketing or anythin, but was an idea that I previously hadn’t seen implemented by any of the major MMORPGs, but just a few days ago that changed with Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) releasing their referral program where members of game that referred their friends were creditted with free game time.

I think that this is a great business move by LOTRO with word of mouth marketing being the backbone to many of the latest online successes like YouTube and Myspce leading me to believe that LORTO will stand to gain a lot from being the first major MMORPGs to offer such a program.

This prompts the question; with Runescape having been in the MMORPG industry since 2001, should they too be thinking of leveraging their already massive user base via incenticised word of mouth promotion to further the growth of the game?

It is, indeed, one the things Jagex keeps undisclosed. People can only guess and experiment. And believe me people did! Oh, yes, for many years Runescape players were looking for the right formula. Fan sites started several research projects to get it right. Did they found it? Yes and No.
Yes, because there are formulas which are 99.9% accurate. And No, because there is no 100% accurate formula. Still 99.9% isn’t bad at all. So now you can see Combat calculators on several fan sites.

But did the formula become open for the general public? Nope, it is still a secret. Now it is a secret of Jagex AND fan sites

Well, I am going to let it out here. Below if the formula I use at Runewise and it is very accurate. I do encourage anyone who is building services for Runescape players to use it. After all, we are all making Runescape community better for the players, are we not?

Note though, that I am not an original author of this formula. I don’t know who is. I myself found this formula in a jungles of PHP developer forums in a closed and forgotten topic a year ago. I cleaned up the code and fixed a few errors, but other than that it is not my invention.

Enjoy!

English Version of the Formula

1. First we calculate the base combat.
If Prayer is an odd number then
base combat = (Defence*100 + Hitpoints*100 + (Prayer-1)*50)/400
If Prayer is an even number then
base combat = (Defence*100 + Hitpoints*100 + Prayer*50)/400

2. Next we calculate personal melee, mage and ranged combats

Melee Combat
Melee Combat = (Attack*130 + Strength*130)/400

Ranged Combat
If Ranged is an odd number then
Ranged Combat = (Ranged*195-65)/400
If Ranged is an even number then
Ranged Combat = (Ranged*195)/400

Mage Combat
If Magic is an odd number then
Mage Combat = (Mage*195-65)/400
If Magic is an even number then
Mage Combat = (Mage*195)/400

3. Pick the highest personal combat (Melee, Ranged or Mage)

You final Combat level is
Base Combat + Highest Personal Combat

PHP version

//calculate base combat
if ($prayer & 1) { $prayer = ($prayer - 1)*50; }
else { $prayer = $prayer*50; }
$base_combat = ($defence*100 + $hitpoints*100 + $prayer)/400;

//calculate personal class combats for melee, ranged and mage
if ($ranged & 1){ $ranged = $ranged*195-65; }
else { $ranged = $ranged*195; }

if ($magic & 1){ $magic = $magic*195-65; }
else { $magic = $magic*195; }

$melee_combat = ($attack*130 + $strength*130)/400;
$range_combat = $ranged/400;
$mage_combat = $magic/400;

//calculate final class combat (get max personal combat)
if ($melee_combat >= $range_combat & $melee_combat >= $mage_combat) {
$class_combat = $melee_combat;
}
elseif ($range_combat >= $melee_combat & $range_combat >= $mage_combat) {
$class_combat = $range_combat;
}
else $class_combat = $mage_combat;

//finalize combat level
$combat_level = $class_combat + $base_combat;

I am a Crewbie at Tip.It, the first RuneScape fansite, and their formula is 100% accurate…

Hi! Thank you for the comment. I am sure that Tip.it formula is great, but unless it is given to Tip.it by Jagex, I don’t think, it can be claimed as 100%. And as far as I understand the formula was deducted by Tip.it crew. A simple test: type all 1 in the calculator and you will get combat 3 which is theoretically wrong  The problem is that in reality Hitpoints can’t be 1 - you get 10 at the start, that’s why combat starts from 3, but Tip.it calculator allows to enter 1 into Hitpoints and therefore you get an error right there. Again, I am not saying the calculator is bad (it is good!), I am just making a point that it is not 100%. From practical stand point it does not really matter though.

The tip.it formula is 100% correct. The fact that is displays combat level 3 if you enter in all 1 isn’t an error. It’s impossible to be lower than level 3 in runescape, so the calculator is designed to display a minimum of that level. I’m not saying your formula is wrong, but there are other 100% correct formulas out there.

Tip.it’s formula is not 100% accurate, that’s a lie. Noone has the 100% accurate formula, so quit saying Tip.it does. The only way to get it would be to hack runescape servers, which is like impossible…

The formula posted here is created by MaxWaterman, a forum mod on the RuneScape forums. His formula is the most accurate in existence (except of course Jagex’ own formula). Don’t believe anyone who claims that their formula is better. Either they aren’t, or they’re just blatant copies of Max’s formula.

“It’s impossible to be lower than level 3 in runescape”.

No it isn’t. Jagex mods can be lvl 1 by setting their hitpoints to 1. Also, there have been reports of a player who has kept an account from the early days of RSC, where users started with 1 hitpoints. This player is also 1 combat.
