In my previous post on Runescape Offering Fan Site Other Source of Income I mentioned the idea that Jagex could look to implement a referral program, which I thought would not only help Runescape fan sites but would also grow the game itself. This idea of a referral program is a new form of marketing or anythin, but was an idea that I previously hadn’t seen implemented by any of the major MMORPGs, but just a few days ago that changed with Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) releasing their referral program where members of game that referred their friends were creditted with free game time.

I think that this is a great business move by LOTRO with word of mouth marketing being the backbone to many of the latest online successes like YouTube and Myspce leading me to believe that LORTO will stand to gain a lot from being the first major MMORPGs to offer such a program.

This prompts the question; with Runescape having been in the MMORPG industry since 2001, should they too be thinking of leveraging their already massive user base via incenticised word of mouth promotion to further the growth of the game?
