I think way back to 2001 when I first stated playing Runescape, back when being able to smith rune was a dream yet to be accomplished by any player, back in a time where tutorial island didn’t exist…
Runescape was in its infancy and the resources available for struggling players were few and of relatively poor quality. There were so many services players were screaming out for yet Jagex was simply unable to provide – Runescape skill guides, quest guides, forums, calculators, tips, general help etc. This inability to provide the most basic help was the catalyst for the formation of many Runescape help sites many of which are still in existence today.
Now I know Runescape is a popular game in its own right, but I can’t help but feel that with the aid of Runescape fan sites, players became more entrenched in the game as they progressed and I have no doubt as a result were more loyal to the game. There are people at fan sites that haven’t played Runescape actively in years but still talk about the game and occasionally jump on as well as try to provide a service for those looking for Runescape help. So it always annoys me when Jagex feel the need to badmouth the very sites that served their game for so long, and still continue to do so only by the tireless dedication by some of Runescape’s most long serving and loyal players. I wonder if there will ever be a day where Jagex publicly recognize Runescape fan sites or the service they have provided the game?
What do you think of Jagex’s stance on non association with Runescape fan sites? Do you think Runescape would be the game it is today without the support of such Runescape fan sites?
