Runescape Password Hackers and Crackers Prey on the Lazy

Runescape Passwords List for Idiots - Hackers Will Crack These
OK I may be being a bit harsh when I call people idiots for using these passwords for Runescape; and I might be being a bit over the top when I say hackers will crack these Runescape passwords - because really all they’d be doing is guessing them, but non the less if your Runescape password is on this list then you need to seriously consider changing it as soon as possible to prevent your Runescape account being hacked. I’m not posting this list so that people get hacked, I’m posting this list because I want to realise that if one of the following is your Runescape password there are a number Runescape hackers that will test these passwords with your Runescape account - it’s just a matter of time.
Just like many people trying to download a Runescape autos often in turn get hacked because instead of downloading a Runescape auto they are actually downloading a trojan Runescape password hackers work in the same way - they prey on the people that are too lazy to choose a unique and original Runescape password.

You may be asking what inspired me to write this post, well today, I like I so often do, I got an email asking a fairly simple question from one of the new members at Runescape Boards (of which I’m an admin at) but like so many other new members that have just joined RSB this person responded to the automatic email (even though it says NOT to respond to the email) that is sent out upon registration that contains their new forum username and password and of course when they reply if they leave the original email in their reply they are basically forwarding their password to me.

Now this in itself is pretty silly, but luckily for them I have no interest in hacking their Runescape accounts, but this sort of this happens to me almost everyday. Whilst this little slip up is partly an accident more than ignorance, sometimes when I look at the passwords people have chosen I can’t help but cringe. Nothings makes me shake my head more than people that have select their Runescape password to be “password” - I mean how easy do you want to make it for people trying to crack your Runescape password, and the same goes for your Runescape password recovery questions.

Runescape Password Creation Tips
Firstly like mentioned above you need your password to be unique and original. That means your Runescape password is different from all your other passwords.
Try to have at least 8 characters in your password. Believe it or not cracking longer passwords longer than 8 character is exceeding more difficult than passwords that are 6 characters or shorter.
Have both letters and numbers on your password. Once again passwords are much harder to crack if they have both letters and numbers in them
Don’t tell ANYONE your password or recovery questions. This sounds simple but this is easily the biggest reason people find that others hack their Runescape accounts.

Make All Your Runescape Passwords Unique
So if you have an easy to guess Runescape password, especially if it is on the Runescape password list above you need to go change it now or risk losing your Runescape account to a lame hacker.

What is the fastest way to raise Thieving? Well, of course, the Pyramid Plundering minigame. There is no arguing about that. But what if you don’t like it or, as in my case, reached level 99 and simply sick of it? What should you do then? Who should you steal from?

I decided to conduct a bit of research and measured 15 minute Thieving sessions with eight most popular ways to raise this skill. Note that the numbers are for level 99, but for level 99 who is NOT extremely good with his mouse.

As you might have expected the fastest way is the way where you don’t get hit on a head too often! Yes, I am talking about Knights – the only potential rival to Pyramid Plundering in speed; still slower but not by much.
Knights bring good money too, but less than Paladins. And, of course, Master Farmers are best money makers out there with a variety of ranarr and other good seeds.
The only other option I liked was safes at Rogue’s Den, because of the bonus Crafting experience and further possibility to make jewelry.
Yeah, and Heroes are the worst!

So my recommendation to people who don’t like Pyramid Plundering would be Knights for experience, Paladins and Master Farmers for money.
At the same time cape owners might want to steal from safes and Master Farmers.

I am pretty sure that the same conclusions remain true for all levels after 90 or so. But it would be very interesting to know if the proportions change a lot at lower levels. If you decide to measure it up, please, post the results here or let me know in any way and I will update the article. Thank you!

New types of Runescape and Future

   Posted by: admin    in Runescape News

The Future of RuneScape
After playing RuneScape for some time, most of us will be wondering what other new things Jagex as a company will be adding to Runescape in the future.
Jagex can really do alot of things to improve its service and get a better RuneScape for us all.
Some of topics I’m going to touch on while in this article about the future of RuneScape will be many of the more popular suggestions and wants of the RuneScape players.
[Much comparison with World of Warcraft and other games is touched on in this article]
New graphics engine for RuneScape

Have you ever played games like World of Warcraft or Lineage II? If you have, then you’ll have an easier time imagining the fun we get up to with this section of the article.

RuneScape is was created and currently maintained with Java, a programming with similar syntax to C++. The current graphics are already top-notch for Java programming with the new redesigning of graphics by the Jagex staff team for RuneScape and more to come in the future, so imagine if RuneScape switched from Java to the other programming languages which run World of Warcraft.

The graphics of the game would be intense and gameplay simply be unbelievable, if you imagine killing the Kalphite Queen in a environment on par with the battles of the Horde against the Alliance.
A console game in the foreseeable future for RuneScape?

This might not seem so far-fetched if you sit down and think about it. Jagex has been aggressively marketing RuneScape in all forms of media such as websites, magazines and even publishing a book on being on a good RuneScape player. And yes, there is an Official Handbook to RuneScape, by Tracey West. The fact that Tracey West is also a kids’ book writer might cause for some hesitancy in buying the Official Handbook, but the book itself should be a good steal at just $6.99USD.

Going back to the future of RuneScape though, it would probably be very easy to adapt the world of RuneScape for a RPG game in which you could play as a NPC
 chosen by Jagex to be the star of the game. Maybe players can finally fulfill their dreams of being Vannaka, greatest swordsman alive in the realm of RuneScape!

New Content in RuneScape
Have you been bored to death by doing the same things over and over again? This is one bad part of playing an MMOPRG, that you have to just repeat same actions you do everyday to get that one level to become master of RuneScape.
We’re all fighting, chatting, learning skills and getting more gold pieces, but even the fun of the game gets overshadowed by the fact we have to redo the same things without stopping if we don’t want to get overtaken.
If RuneScape adds new content in the future, it might be a little more tolerable even with repetition.
Some of the new content I have in mind are those storyline differences made by your choices while doing quests, and also just more stuff added to the game!

If you have ever played games like WWE Smackdown, or KOTOR(Knights of The Old Republic), then you will have gone through what I’m suggesting to implement for RuneScape quests.
Rather than having one set way to finish any quest, Jagex could add to RuneScape some minor differences, and let users play it their own way with guidance from NPCs(non-player characters).

For quests like Romeo and Juliet, you could even play the role of a family member to bring them back together in a meeting and talk like in the original story, rather than just a messenger boy passing around items and messages.

Lifting the Top Levels
For RuneScape, that could mean raising the maximum level for each skill to maybe more than 100, and the Combat Level to 129, a level for every combat related skill.

Although this might be a good idea in the future, what can the users do when there aren’t that many new items to strive for?
If there isn’t enough engaging content like better weapons, quests that only level 100s can do in reward for their hard work on RuneScape, nobody will want to play anymore.

Game developers do know though, that when you lift a level, there obviously must be some kind of incentive other than the pride of being the top in the game, to motivate players to put in more hours and train. RuneScape won’t be the exception to the rule, which definitely means that there will be newer and improved items for people over level 100 in a skill, so keep on campaigning for your higher levels!

If you are wondering how to utilize the new Runescape highscores service provided by Jagex on your own site and don’t know where to start, then this article is for you. I will provide a sample PHP code which you can grab and reuse whenever you wish.

But before we start I’d like to give a little background for the issue. As you might be aware Jagex made a step toward fan sites recently by introducing a new programmatic way to access Runescape highscores. Previously, if you wanted to obtain highscores for a player you would have to go to the regular Runescape high scores page with lots of HTML and images, grab its content and parse. The code would look like something that ugly:

//———- PHP code to follow ————
$url = ‘http://hiscore.runescape.com/lang/en/aff/runescape/hiscorepersonal.ws?user1=’ . $user;
$rs_string = file_get_contents($url);
preg_match_all(’#<table cellpadding=”3″ cellspacing=”0″ border=0>(.*?)</table>#s’, $rs_string, $stats);
$score = $stats[1][0];
$score = strip_tags($score);
//—————- end of PHP code ————————

Yuck! Then you would also parse the resulting table and account for things not featured in high scores for different players.

But now you can simply go to something like this:
http://hiscore.runescape.com/index_l…?player=Vaskor
and get all the stats you need! Plus this way will get you information about 30+ stats even when they are not shown in the high scores! Truly awesome. You can replace the ugly code shown above with this much more elegant and useful one (which works faster as well):

//———- PHP code to follow ————-
$cats_for_rs = array(’Overall’, ‘Attack’, ‘Defence’, ‘Strength’, ‘Hitpoints’,
‘Ranged’, ‘Prayer’, ‘Magic’, ‘Cooking’, ‘Woodcutting’, ‘Fletching’, ‘Fishing’, ‘Firemaking’, ‘Crafting’, ‘Smithing’, ‘Mining’, ‘Herblore’, ‘Agility’, ‘Thieving’, ‘Slayer’, ‘Farming’, Runecraft’, ‘Hunter’, ‘Construction’);

$user = “Vaskor”;
$txt = file_get_contents(’http://hiscore.runescape.com/index_lite.ws?player=’.$user);

$score = array();

//explode using end of line as a delimiter
$data = explode (”\n”, $txt);

$ind = 0;
foreach ($data as $word) {
//key is a skill name
$key = $cats_for_rs[$ind];
//explode using a comma as a delimiter
$data_n = explode (”,”, $word);
$score[$key][”Rank”] = $data_n[0];
$score[$key][”Level”] = $data_n[1];
$score[$key][”Exp”] = $data_n[2];
$ind++;
}
//use level as a key for further processing as rank may be -1
//for 30+ stats not featured in high scores
//—————- end of PHP code ————————

That’s it. Easy and simple.

However, there is a catch…
If the user does not have ANY skills in the high scores Jagex service returns ‘Page not found’ error and it brakes the whole thing down! Ouch…

They should have returned data in the same format if a person is not in the high scores… Well, they don’t… So, if you ask me, the new high scores service has only limited usability. In some cases it cannot be used because of this limitation.
I sent a suggestion to Jagex to fix the service behavior, but no response was given back to me. So for the time being I personally still use the old and ugly parsing method at Runewise and make a secondary calls to the Jagex service only to fill gaps for 30+ non-high score skills. Alas.

But again, the new service can be used in many other cases and it is definitely a step forward. I look forward additional services from Jagex which would allow fan sites to provide better, richer experiences to the players.

Ever since I was able to plant my own Spirit Trees I’ve been wondering how to put this ability to a proper use. Neither of the three available locations looked particularly appealing and for a long time I was simply growing Spirit Trees for Farming experience in Port Sarim and didn’t use it for transportation at all.

All right. Here are the three options.

Option 1 (Ecteria)
Teleport to Al-Kharid using a dueling ring
Pick cactus spines
Visit the bank and take a gnome glider to Gnome Stronghold
Go south and plant the first fruit tree
Use the spirit tree to teleport to Ecteria and plant a bush
Use the spirit tree to teleport to the Gnome Tree Village and plant the second fruit tree
Teleport to Ardougne and take a boat to Brimhaven
Plant the third fruit tree
Take a boat to Catherby, bank and plant the forth fruit tree.
Option 2 (Port Sarim)
Teleport to Draynor using a Glory Amulet, bank there
Run to the spirit tree in Port Sarim and teleport to the Gnome Tree Village
Run out and plant the first fruit tree, run back.
Use the spirit tree to teleport to the Gnome Stronghold and plant the second fruit tree
Use the spirit tree to teleport to the Khazard Battle Field.
Run to Ardougne Castle, go to the 2nd floor, pick up a black scimitar, pick the locked chest (you get 1000gp, a raw shark, adamant ore and an uncut sapphire)
That basically puts you at the dock for Brimhaven, take a boat to Brimhaven and plant the third fruit tree.
Take a boat to Catherby.
Bank, then plant the forth fruit tree.
Option 3 (Brimhaven)
Teleport to Al-Kharid using a dueling ring
Pick cactus spines
Visit the bank and take a gnome glider to the Gnome Stronghold
Go south and plant the first fruit tree
Use the spirit tree to teleport to the Gnome Tree Village and plant the second fruit tree
Use the spirit tree to teleport to Brimhaven
Plant the third fruit tree
Take a boat to Catherby, bank and plant the forth fruit tree.
I decided to investigate these three options further and spent a few weeks growing Spirit Trees in all three locations and doing measurements. The results are in the table below. Note that the time is ‘walking time’. In order to remove ‘Agility’ factor I walked during the tests. Note also that I was wearing an activated Ring of Charos which lowered cost of the Charter Boat rides. Finally, planting time is NOT included – only walking is included.
My thoughts at the time were something like:
Ecteria – nah, the fairy ring is far better for the Kingdom Management
Brimhaven – I can always take a boat from Ardougne or Catherby
Port Sarim – nice job, Jagex, in finding one of the few spots in the Port Sarim area, where the tree would be completely useless

Well, months passed by and I started to suspect that maybe, yes, maybe a Spirit Tree can be added to my Fruit Trees farming route. Again, unable to decide I posted the question on several major Runescape forums. I wasn’t very much surprised to see the same kind of confusion and diversity. Yes, players were using Spirit Trees in their Fruit Trees farming routes, but they were using all three locations! Nevertheless, three main routes/usages stood out.

And before I go into details I want to thank players who contributed to the topics and helped to determine these routes:
Toomuk and Lizarick from Zybez Runescape Community forum
Meol, Mpg321 and Hephaistos50 from Tip.it forum

As you can see the walking time is very close, so it cannot be considered to be a deciding factor and each option has its own advantages and disadvantages. For instance, option #2 brings more bonus money, but requires 72 Thieving and provides less Farming exp. Option #3 is the fastest and cheapest, but again not the best Farming exp. Option #1 is similar to #3 but adds an additional bush to the route. Plus it might be useful for Kingdom Management (to restore popularity without visiting the counselor).

At the end, I’ve chosen Option #1 with a Spirit Tree on Ecteria island – simply because I can get a bit more farming exp by doing it. But decide for yourself!

Long Journey for runescape

   Posted by: admin    in Runescape Discussion & Wiki

Long Journey. Part 3
See the Part 2

————————————————————

We do look alike, don’t we?

I went further south and soon reached the Eastern Gate of the city. Guards in chain mail blocked the entrance. I tried to talk to them, but it was not one of the options. I could only pickpocket or kill them. Fine. I killed them. A bow would have done nicely, as their chain mails are full of holes, but my dragon axe did the work just as well.

The guards are still alive on the picture – I am not stupid enough to give Misthalin’s king such clear evidence on the murder account.

Varrock! The greatest city of Runescape! Even Falador – shining pearl of the eastern world – is dwarfed by Misthalin’s capital. Shops, chapels, sewers, banks, gangs, smiths, kitchens, pubs, palaces, mines, and above all - people of Varrock! What a unique combination of new and experienced players! It is always fun to be there.

I walked into the city. The first building on my right was that ‘dummy’ place where I am not allowed anymore. But on my left was one of the banks – the one where all rune essence trading is conducted. I hopped in and deposited the lime stone and yew logs. Someone was shouting “Big sale 50K for all”, then “Nubs it worth more”. Someone else was “buying 1 nat!!!” Typical Varrock.

I closed the gate and looked around. Surprisingly there was no road, trees stood in front of me. Somewhere behind the trees scattered rocks laid on the ground. The largest rock was beaming with brown light. Now, have you ever seen brown light in real life…? Me neither…
Of course, it was an Earth Altar behind the trees. I’ve been inside this altar only once, when I needed to make 10 lava runes for the Swan Song quest. Air, Water and Fire Altars are much more useful for runecrafters. Naturally, I walked to the altar and made a picture.

I had to chop down a yew tree (see the stump?), so it would not obstruct the view.

I noticed people passing me heading north. I followed them and soon I heard the noise of trees being cut into pieces. Yes, there was the lumber yard and sawmill operator was wandering in front of it. I used to deal with him a lot in the early days of my house construction. Now I always send my Cook to the sawmill instead of me. She is quite a reliable servant with a bad attitude.

There was a hole in the lumber yard fence, but I decided against going in there. I’ve been there before and nearly went crazy while looking for a kitten between the crates.

I already spent too much time in the countryside – great city of Varrock was waiting for me!

I turned south, passed the Balloon landing spot and made another picture in the small square by the statue of Saradomin.

And to complete the picture all clerks in the bank turned their backs to the customers.

I proceeded down the street. Through the intersection and pass the best source of water in the city. Lowe’s Archery shop was on my left, Horvik’s Armory on my right, the Central Square right in front of me.

Central Square in Varrock is truly romantic. Poor fellow Romeo is wandering there, crying for his beloved Juliet. All kinds of Runescape love struck people come there too. Like this time, someone was asking for a girlish present. I offered my colored gloves, but they were not girlish enough.

North from the Square the road led to the Palace. Majestic trees stood on both sides of the road. All in all, very impressive entrance. This is one of those roads I use every day. But I don’t take it to visit the king of one of his famous knights. It is the road I take to check up on my tree patch. This time a beautiful willow tree was growing nicely out there.

I checked its health, leaned to the trunk and took a nap with willow song in my ears and lightness in my heart.

APIS for Runescape gold

   Posted by: admin    in Runescape News

Badly Needed

Access to skill levels/exp for every player and every skill. Not just skills from highscores, but all of them. And I don’t care about ranks. It is harder and harder to get into highscores nowadays; most of the players do not have all or even half of their skills in highscores. If it is too much to ask, maybe access to levels/exp for skills which are over 20 or 30.
Possibility to get a list of quests completed by a player as well as possibility to check if a particular quest was completed by a player.
Possibility to check if a particular player is a member or not.
Access to a player quest points number.

Nice to Have
there is one API (Application Programming Interface). Specifically an API that allows programmatic access to information from the Runescape highscores. This is the good news. The bad news is that it is the only Runescape API available for fan sites to build their services on. Taking in account ‘we choose to ignore fan sites’ position Jagex has, it is not very surprising. Actually, the fact that the ‘highscore lite’ API was released was indeed a pleasant surprise. At least it gave a hope that more APIs may be released some day. That’s why this article is here. It is basically a wish list of a fan site developer with a touch of hope on top of it…
The list is not very big, but not a small one either. I separated the wish items into two categories with self-explanatory names: ‘badly needed’ and ‘nice to have’. All right, here we go.

Access to a player combat number. It would be also nice to finally find out what the real combat formula is.
RSS feed for Runescape news.
Monsters database with an API to get monsters stats by name as well as make it possible to search by other criteria.
Possibility to check status of the achievement diaries tasks. Same for the Varrock museum and Bones and Rags man.
The list may go on of course, but other things I am thinking about are not realistic, so no point in asking for them. Things like statistics about monster kills for each player, statistics about player death and reasons and such.
